Sexual Assault on College Campus’s: Specifically with women
When will there be a solution for sexual assault towards women on college campus's?
“Why women, and where’s the solution”?
Through my focus on sexual assault on college campus’s and taking a look into how come so many women have experienced sexual assault, and why women are the key target. I focused on surveying both men and women and their knowledge on the extent of their knowledge about sexual assault, someone they knew who has been sexually assaulted and how we can go about changing that within our society.
Sexual assault for women is a common occurrence and women are taught to fear men, how to escape and how most importantly to avoid being harassed. I wanted to take a look into why women were perceived as being more prone to being sexually assaulted then men. I wanted to get an understanding of how we can use what we know to help change so many women being sexually assaulted. Where as a society did we end up failing women?
In my survey study that I did I focused on seeing how many people knew someone who had been sexually assaulted. I geared my questions towards why women were more sexually assaulted then men. How do we go about as a society changing that, do we teach our boys at a young age on the basis of equality of men and women, or do we teach both genders? You can see the link to my survey here.
I was able to in my Analytics for Design class at Boise State, work on creating a solution for how have women come forward and overall create a safety empowerment for women.
“Understanding of Sexual Assault”
My surveys I was able to focus on questions that would allow me more than one response and in depth responses. Seeing what we should do to change the statistics in women getting sexually assaulted, I focused my question on education men at a young age about women and men being equal. Since my other question was why were women targeted, as I suspected society has deemed women as vulnerable and as easy targets. Below are my results for educating men at a young age.
While I also factored in how many people knew someone about sexual assault cases on campus. With more than 25 or more people knowing about sexual assaulting or having known someone who was sexually assaulted.
The current statistics and our security for women have been failing women because so many victims never actually come forward. More than 90% of sexual assault victims on campus don’t report their assault from the fear of not being believed and being blamed for something that wasn’t their fault in the first place.
How can we help women feel safer and have victims come forward?
It’s not a shock that so many women don’t come forward for fear of being blamed and shamed. It’s how society has let women be perceived as docile, weak and or timid. As a society we have failed greatly on protecting the women in society, shunning them when they cry for help. How is it that we allow such type of atrocities to occur on College campus’s let alone anywhere else. Women shouldn’t be forced to learn how to protect themselves, as men aren’t they are allowed to pounce around any given time without a fear of ever being harmed.
I wanted to redirect my findings and statistics on how to help women. I ended my end result on creating an app where women can come together and speak about their experiences and build each other up to come forward. Through my search and re search I noticed, that maybe it is not women that we need to help educate and help come forward but hold men accountable, teach men the basis of equality and that women aren’t weak and docile.
My app is intended towards the use on campus’s to give way to a safe space for current victims and and past victims to come in unity to create a ripple affect.
Below are my resources and charts I created on my journey through creating a solution for women that have experienced sexual assault:
